Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist born in 1960 and died in 1988. He is considered one of the most important and influential artists of his time, and his work had a great influence on contemporary art. Basquiat began his artistic career creating graffiti on the streets of New York in the 1970s, before becoming a leading figure in the city's underground art scene in the 1980s. His work was often politically engaged and dealt with topics such as race, class and cultural identity. He used symbols, words and phrases in his paintings to convey his message, creating a unique visual language. Basquiat died prematurely of a drug overdose at the age of 27, but his work remains highly respected and influential in the contemporary art world.
